Materials You'll Need

Step-by-Step Emergency Tarp Installation

Step 1: Assess from the Ground First

If the tarp is wider than 6 feet, add horizontal battens across the middle (perpendicular to the slope) every 3-4 feet. These prevent wind from billowing the tarp and peeling it off.

Step 9: Seal the Edges (Optional)

For extended temporary coverage (multiple weeks), apply roofing cement or mastic along the top and side edges of the tarp where it meets the roof surface. This creates a water-resistant seal that prevents wind-driven rain from creeping under the edges.

Common Tarping Mistakes That Make Things Worse

Mistake 1: Using a Tarp That's Too Small

A tarp that barely covers the visible damage will let water in from every direction. Water enters uphill of the damage and flows down into it. The tarp must cover the damage AND the area above it.

The top edge of the tarp must be ABOVE (upslope of) the damage. An edge at the damage line is an open door for water.

Mistake 3: Using Sandbags or Bricks Instead of Screws

Weight-only fastening is inadequate for anything beyond a few hours. Wind lifts the tarp edge, sandbags slide, and the tarp becomes a sail. Screws through battens are the only reliable method.

Mistake 4: Using Thin, Cheap Tarps
